Photograph Vs. Snapshot
A snapshot is a picture that's taken really quickly and without much planning or effort. These typically result in candid photos and less than perfect images. A photograph on the other hand typically involves much more staging and thought. These are what I think of when "photo shoot" is mentioned. The two can cross over. You can get awesome candids during a shoot or a beautiful photo without much effort.

Is the work of James Nachtwey snapshots or photography? Justify your answer with solid reasoning.
I believe that there is a bit of both in his work. His photos are taken spur of the moment, without setting anything up like snapshots would be, but portrays a story like you want your photography to do.
What does he say about anger?
He said he wants to use anger to help control his images rather than clouding his mind.
Did you notice visual irony in his images?
In a few of them, yes. (Especially the one with the man shooting a gun from the bedroom)
What is life like for him? For his subjects?
Life for him is dangerous. He definitely puts himself in peril to get a lot of great shots. His subjects however don't escape - these conditions like he can and therefore have it much harder.
How does he do justice for the people he photographs? Does he do justice?
Yes and no. He's sharing photos of these people that help bring awareness to their situations, but I don't know how much
- it's helping.
What is key to his work that makes it extraordinary and award winning?
It tells a story and acts as a wake up call while still maintaining an amazing photo visually.
Why does he do what he does?
Well, I'd hope because he enjoys it, but also to open people's eyes to what's going on in the world.
What was most striking to you about the video and his work? Why? If nothing, why not?
The most striking things to me are how raw his images are. Especially in black and white, they seem like you're actually -
- watching history happen.
Why do you think he shoots mostly black and white?
Black and white has a much stronger effect than color photos do in most cases. I think he wants them to stand out.
What is the power of a photograph..if indeed you believe that a photo holds power? Does Nachtwey's work have power?
I mean, a picture does in fact tell a thousand words without saying anything at all. His photos definitely have a presence to - them.

How many times do you see a photograph cross your path daily?
Honestly, in the world of social media, hundreds of times a day. Not to mention all of the images in textbooks - and around the school.
What role does photography play in your world?
In my world, photography serves as a means of entertainment, education, and inspiration for everything I do.
Is photography part of the "world" you look at?
Absolutely. Pictures can say more than anything else can. They're visual memories.
Does it touch your school day, work day, play day, or is it throughout the entertainment you seek? Is there some that you notice more than others? Why? Perhaps you are noticing photographs more....Why?
There are definitely some photos I notice more and that's almost always due to the color palette of the photo. - I love soft, warm, vintage looking photos and I'm constantly seeing these colors more all over the place. Due - to my love of photos that's lasted a very long time, I wouldn't say I'm noticing them more, but I'm definitely not noticing them less.
How does photography affect how your perceive information if it does at all?
Photos make everything a bit more real and really make the information stick in my mind better.
Why did you take this class?
I took this class because I love photography and I want to better my skills.
What was the resulting goal in mind when you signed up?
To improve upon what I can already do and to take more photos.
What goal do you have for improvement from the beginning of this class to the end of this class? How will you know?
I'd love to understand composition more than I do now. I'll be able to compare my photos and hopefully see a drastic change in how my photos look.
What is your plan for success in this class?
To always put forth my best effort and never stop learning.
